UPDATE October 2021: Now on a variety of paperback retailers
After formatting and checking, I upload the ebook to the four main ebook retailers as a pre-order which means readers can order now and be sure their copy will come zinging onto their e-reader at one minute past midnight on 19 October. I use a fantastic piece of publishing software called Vellum which produces a lovely looking book. Of course, it’s up to me to put things in the right order and include the correct information!
The print file has a different journey. After setting it following the usual design for all Pulcheria Press books, I comb through the interior file to ensure there are no single word pages or strangely split words and that everything is in the correct place. Inevitably, there is something!
After I put that right, the .pdf file goes to printer-distributor, Ingram Spark along with the cover that my designer Jessica Bell has produced using a special template. Ingram Spark distribute all over the book world and actually all over the real world, which is why Double Pursuit has already popped up on Barnes & Noble in the US as a pre-order. On the 19th October, it’ll be sent out to people who have placed an advance order. Please do order it! Double Pursuit shows up already on Amazon, but as unavailable. That’s another story – I’ll explain below.
Anyway, Ingram Spark organises it so that Double Pursuit will, like all my other books, be in Book Depository, Waterstones Online, AbeBooks and loads of other online bookshops by 19 October. I’ve sent for a pre-publication proof which should arrive today!
Publishing a print book on Amazon is different. You use the same interior file, but a different cover template. I leave all that to Jessica to sort out. However, you can’t enter a pre-order date, so you have to judge exactly when you upload and press the ‘Publish’ button so that it’s there for the readers at the right time, i.e. your publication date! But you can upload it as a draft and get a proof version printed. Amazon kindly(!) put a great big line across the front which detracts from the beauty of the book, and their own proof barcode on the back, obliterating part of your lovely cover. But it’s only for the proof; readers get a clean book.
Amazon like to sell readers their own book (they make more money that way), so the Ingram Spark version will be distributed to them as to other retailers, but Amazon waits until I upload direct before they make it live. So if you like print books, don’t despair, Double Pursuit will be there in time.

Mel has a strong personality, so I thought she should come out of the shadow. However, she is not a figure in plain sight, hence the half-silhouette.
I noticed during a recent visit to several bookshops in the UK, which I visited recently, that black and white photos seem to be a current trend for crime and thrillers. However, I didn’t want to lose the vibrant background.
Double Pursuit will be out on 19 October 2021 and will be going up shortly for pre-order at the usual retailers in ebook.The paperback will be available from publication day.

Well, the BM does exhibitions well; I think that’s well-known, but this one drew in exhibits from several museums across the world including Pompeii/Naples and explained the man in his age, one full of political intrigue and jostling for power (as most Roman periods were!).
Emperors and groups of powerful people with vested interests (senators, army commanders, senior palace bureaucrats) tend to ‘damn the memory’ of the previous ruler so traditional accounts of Nero had followed the writings of those beholden to those vested interests.
This exhibition questioned all that and drew deep on the sources to reassess Nero and his actions in context. It wasn’t a whitewash, just a re-examination. Many visitors may not have been aware of the strong influence of Agrippina, Nero’s mother, on the very young emperor, or of the fact that Nero wasn’t in Rome at the time of the Great Fire in 64 CE*. As well as referencing great events such as the Boudiccan Revolt, war with the Parthians, the Great Fire, exhibits included scenes from Roman life as they applied to Nero’s time and reflecting his interests – building and arts, especially the theatre.
Although a great deal was familiar to me, I enjoyed the whole thing and was surprised that two hours had gone by when I left. The exhibition ends on October: I urge you to take the time to and go and see it.
