Mélisende thrillers

Mélisende des Pittones (Mel) is the daughter of a French father and English mother. Her comfortably off family have been settled in Poitou in western France, even weathering the French Revolution. She was sent to a top Parisian private school and although she did sufficiently well in her exams, she did not turn out as a ‘young lady’.

She joined the French army at 18 and has successfully completed two 5-year contracts, becoming a senior NCO intelligence analyst in a special forces team. At the start of Double Identity, she’s about to marry her life’s love, Gérard Rohlbert, who’s been working in the City of London. She’s looking forward to a future life with her perfect partner and living a Parisian metropolitan lifestyle, possibly with children. Then her life is wrecked.

Jeff McCracken, heading the Met Police investigation in London, is sure Mel’s implicated but with no obvious cause of death, evidence or motive, his case is going nowhere. A former council estate boy, McCracken has worked tenaciously to achieve a solid reputation for success. Unfortunately, his mouth sometimes gets in the way, and he doesn’t rate posh birds.

Forced to work together within the European Investigation and Regulation Service (EIRS), Mel and McCracken are in constant conflict. She resents McCracken’s lack of respect for her different expertise and professional skills, which plays straight to her own secret fear of failure.

He’s an ex-council estate boy who’s shucked off the petty criminal environment of his youth and mistrusts her methods. He shows little sensitivity to her personal loss.

Both are intelligent, competent and persistent and by the end of the book reach a level of accommodation with each other, personal and professional. Stand by for some personal fireworks as well as a thrilling story!
